Groot Topiary Inspired by Disney+ Short

Today we learned more about the story behind EPCOT’s Groot topiary. Imagineers used an episode from the “I Am Groot” series from Disney+ as inspiration for the display. In “Groot Take a Bath,” the title character stumbles upon a hot spring on an alien planet. After adding some local plants and an iridescent goo he squeezed from an alien bee into the water, Groot begins sprouting leaves. He molds the new growths into various outfits. Toddler Groot is cute, even when he resorts to violence. It’s a great episode that should make you giggle.

Oh, the alien bee survives his ordeal. You can see him buzzing in Groot’s planter near Cosmic Rewind.

Anyway, back to the topiary…

Once Imagineers had their story, they needed to build the toddler flora colossus. The team used 3D modeling and printing along with traditional sculpting and paint to come up with the finished product.

“The focus on maintaining the integrity of the character, while continuing to streamline the design and construction process, has motivated us to improvise and evolve on how the EPCOT International Flower & Garden topiary team creates and builds these incredible pieces of living art each year.”

Steven Montalvo, Industrial Designer with Disney Live Entertainment

Imagineers have started to push the envelope with EPCOT’s newest topiaries. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for future Flower & Garden Festivals. This year’s Festival runs through May 27, 2024.
