Disney Cruise Line Plans Permanent Galveston Presence in 2027

As Disney Cruise Line expands its fleet, the need for additional home ports grows. While most domestic sailings currently depart from Florida, Disney also operates limited itineraries from Galveston, San Diego, and Honolulu. Galveston, in particular, may play a larger role in the future. According to Rodger Rees, port director and CEO of Galveston Wharves, Texas will become a permanent home base for a DCL ship in 2027.

Rees made the remarks at a joint meeting between the Galveston City Council and the Wharves Board of Trustees on Wednesday. The Galveston County Daily News first reported the news.

Rees also believes Disney will bring a larger ship to Texas. The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, both 2,700-passenger vessels, are the only Disney ships to have sailed from Galveston. While the Daily News article mentions the behemoth Disney Adventure (a 6,700-passenger vessel), there’s no reason to believe Disney will bring that ship to the U.S. The Adventure sets sail from Singapore this December.

Galveston makes sense as a permanent Disney Cruise Line port. According to Rees, 40 million people live within an 8-hour drive of the South Texas city.
