Villains Land Rumor Suggests Imagineers May Be Going Bigger
Over the weekend, Len Testa posted a comment on the WDWMAGIC boards that has social media buzzing. According to Len, Imagineers working on the park’s upcoming villains-themed expansion have been told to think bigger:
“I’m hearing the initial plans for Villains Land have been scrapped. Imagineers have been told to think of bigger, bolder ideas. Budget secondary.
Not sure if this is ‘new players, new game’ re: Josh [D’Amaro] as CEO.”
We don’t typically treat web forum comments as news, but in this case, we will make an exception. Len doesn’t do clickbait. We pay attention when he posts.
So what could this mean for Magic Kingdom’s villains? That’s where this article will be light on details. That’s because Disney has been light on details.
What Disney has officially told us
Josh D’Amaro, current Disney Experiences head and future CEO, originally announced the project at the 2024 D23 Fan Expo. He teased that the land would include two major attractions, dining, and shopping on “an incredibly twisted grand scale.”

A few months later, D’Amaro revealed the villains coming to Magic Kingdom at a D23 event in Brazil. He also shared a light backstory for the area, saying that “a mysterious spell has been cast, summoning villains from every realm. In this land, heroes don’t come to save the day — and there may not be a happily ever after!”
At Destination D23, we learned that legendary animator Andreas Deja is consulting, pointing Imagineers toward the studio’s animated heavyweight baddies like Gaston, Jafar, and Scar for inspiration. WDI Executive Producer Wyatt Winter said their stories will contribute to the “big personalities, bold visuals, and rich backgrounds” coming to Magic Kingdom.
Winter also shared that Imagineers have visited Barcelona and Paris to study Art Nouveau architecture. He said, “Imagineers received an intimate look at the architectural aesthetics that will serve as the overall design inspiration for the land.”
All of that is the classic Disney slow-play reveal. Heavy on vibes, light on “the rides will do this.”
The stuff we kind of know
A recent wastewater permit revealed the layouts for the Villains-themed land and Piston Peak. The former includes two large show buildings. While the diagrams are newsworthy and created plenty of social media discussion, they are simple utility footprints and not blueprints for the land. They reveal where some of the plumbing goes, not how Maleficent will turn into a dragon.

So if Imagineers have indeed been told to swing for the fences, it doesn’t necessarily mean the layouts will change. But the concepts inside them can still evolve.
The new CEO angle
Here’s the interesting part of Len’s quote: budget secondary.
When did that instruction land? We may never know. Josh D’Amaro was only officially named CEO a couple of weeks ago, but let’s not pretend he just got a map to the building. As Chairman of Disney Experiences, he would’ve had fingerprints all over this project long before any emails went out.
Whether the mandate arrived last Tuesday or six months ago is almost beside the point.
Because from this moment forward, Villains Land is going to be associated with D’Amaro the same way Bob Iger is linked to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Michael Eisner is tied to Hollywood (MGM) Studios and Animal Kingdom.
And while Iger and Eisner’s contributions were groundbreaking and vital to Disney, villains are in a different league.
Villains are Walt’s Disney.

This land has to hit. Not in a big way. In a mind-boggling way. It has to overwhelm.
So if the rumor is accurate, and if D’Amaro is the one pushing the throttle forward, I’m all in. It says the new boss understands the assignment. Beginning your tenure by walking into Imagineering and saying, “Make it bigger,” is one heck of an introduction.
