The Muppets’ Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Pre-Show Might Be Worth the Chicken Exit

Walt Disney World may have a problem on its hands. It looks like Imagineers have created the perfect preshow for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, one that appeals to both kids and adults. The problem is that what comes after that studio scene may not be for everyone.

Disney shared a short clip of what guests will experience once they enter G-Force Records’ Studio C. I’ve watched it at least 20 times. Scooter unraveling, the penguins running the soundboard, The Electric Mayhem refusing to stop jamming, Beaker being sacrificed by Dr. Bunsen Honeydew… It’s Muppet greatness. A preshow rarely steals the thunder from the ride itself, but that looks to be happening on Sunset Boulevard.

I shared Disney’s preshow video with several people this afternoon. My wife loved it, but not enough to brave that coaster. A mother of tweens and teens told me her youngest will want to see the show but will not board a L.I.M.O. under any circumstances. Another friend said she’d ride despite being terrified of the launch.

It’s a small sample size, but I have a feeling plenty of guests will share those sentiments.

So what can Disney do for guests who want to experience that Muppets magic without accelerating from 0 to 57 mph in 2.8 seconds?

The chicken exit

Theme park fans call it the “chicken exit,” a discreet way for guests to leave an attraction without riding. Some people have medical concerns. Others simply don’t like coasters. And sometimes families just don’t want to split up before boarding. Whatever the reason, Cast Members are more than happy to help guests exit without making a big deal out of it.

What’s nice about Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster’s setup is that the chicken exit leads to the attraction’s unload area. Guests still get the feeling of stepping backstage and seeing the operation unfold before slipping out.

The only downside? You still have to wait through almost the entire queue to use it. The exit point is near the boarding area, not the preshow.

Could you ask a Cast Member to leave after watching the scene in Studio C? Sure. But we don’t recommend it. We’re expecting Imagineering to load the backstage alley with details and sight gags. Imagine Statler and Waldorf perched above the launch area, roasting every departing L.I.M.O. Even if that specific gag doesn’t happen, the space is destined for Muppet nonsense.

Update: Statler and Waldorf have been revealed, and it looks like they’re located in the ride’s unload area. Anyone using the chicken exit will get to hear their zingers.

Unfortunately, there’s another catch: anyone under 48 inches can’t enter the queue at all. So if you’ve got a Muppet-loving kid who isn’t tall enough yet, YouTube may be your only option for seeing Scooter and Beaker in action. Fortunately, there will be plenty of videos online within days.

What about Rider Switch?

Disney’s Rider Switch service sounds like a solution, but it really isn’t.

Rider Switch allows adults to take turns riding while someone stays behind with children or non-riders. Once the first group finishes, the second group can enter through the Lightning Lane without waiting all over again.

The problem is that Rider Switch is designed around riding the attraction, not experiencing the queue. The handoff happens outside the attraction entrance. If Disney handled Rider Switch inside the queue itself, this would honestly be the perfect answer. Families could enjoy the Muppet chaos together before splitting at the last second.

So guests wanting the preshow without the high-speed concert run are left with one option: standing in the queue and taking the chicken exit before loading.

And judging by Disney’s preview clip, plenty of people are probably going to do exactly that.
