SpongeBob SquarePants Mural Debuts at Universal Kids Resort Hotel
Construction on the Universal Kids Resort hotel hit a big milestone this week as crews began painting the SpongeBob SquarePants mural. SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks can be seen peeking through the scaffolding on the building’s south side. If I had known they’d be greeting me tonight, I’d have shown up much earlier to get some better-lit shots. I promise to snap some better photos on Thursday.

Universal Kids’ murals are a major design feature of the hotel, helping break up its colorful checkerboard pattern. Along with SpongeBob, the other end caps feature Shrek and Puss in Boots, Minions (both yellow and purple), and several Trolls. Each design also includes the Universal Kids Resort logo.
The first mural matches the concept art Universal shared with the City of Frisco back in June, which makes sense. Every part of the hotel’s design required city approval.

The illustration style, made up of overlapping geometric color blocks, feels very Pop Art to me. SpongeBob, instead of being entirely yellow, includes a deep reddish-pink area that adds an unexpected pop of contrast.
Unfortunately, Patrick Star might not be visible to park guests. Unlike the other three murals, the bottom third of SpongeBob’s is hidden behind a louvered wall enclosing the hotel’s AC units.

Even with a hidden Patrick, these murals are going to be a big hit. Especially with Universal Kids Resort’s target demographic.
