Permit Filed for New Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Signage at Magic Kingdom
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is getting new signage. This morning, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a Notice of Commencement permit for work at 4485 Caribbean Way in the Magic Kingdom. Design Communications Ltd., a frequent Imagineering collaborator, will handle the work.
The company’s creations should be well-known by both Disney and Universal park guests. Recently, they installed a new marquee outside Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. They’re also responsible for several beautiful signs in Epic Universe, as well as the massive “UNIVERSAL” sign about to be installed on the roof of the Universal Kids Resort Hotel.
This permit might be the last for Big Thunder’s extended refurbishment. The ride has been closed since January 6, 2025. In the nearly 15 months since, crews have replaced the entire coaster track, refreshed animatronics, and added a new Rainbow Caverns scene featuring phosphorescent pools.
Today’s filing is also a good sign for timing. Signage tends to go in late, often just before an attraction reopens, which keeps Disney on pace for an early May return.

As for what’s changing, we’re not entirely sure. Big Thunder’s wooden marquees are still in place, which suggests this permit may be tied to other elements. The ride and its queue are packed with signage, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for what’s new come May. But after nearly a year and a half of downtime, it’s all going to feel pretty new, I bet.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens in Magic Kingdom in early May, 2026.
