Imagineering Used Motion Capture to Bring Scooter to Life for Muppets Coaster
Disney shared a sneak peek at Scooter, the Muppet Audio-Animatronic calling the shots at G-Force Records. We also got another look at the penguin audio engineers running the board. Longtime Muppet fans already know them as the pit orchestra from Muppet*Vision 3D.
Scooter may be an animatronic, but he’ll still move like a Muppet. Walt Disney Imagineering used motion-capture technology to make sure he passes the eye test for those of us who grew up watching The Muppet Show.

As you can see in Disney’s photo, they equipped him with a mocap suit and hat while a puppeteer put Scooter through his paces. From Disney:
“By recording and tracking Scooter’s performance, Walt Disney Imagineering was able to build and program a figure that looks, moves, and emotes exactly like Scooter should, right down to the small details.”
I love that level of detail.
We don’t know if David Rudman was behind Scooter during the motion-capture session. He’s been Scooter’s puppeteer since 2008. Before that, the character was performed by Richard Hunt until his passing in 1992.
One more word on the penguins. Check out the G-Force Records logo on their headphones. That detail may not jump out to most fans in the queue, but it’ll show up when I’m using my 200mm lens.

L.I.M.O. service
Scooter’s role in the pre-show is vital. As the only adult in the room, he’s trying to get The Electric Mayhem to stop jamming out on “Can You Picture That?” so they can actually make it to their gig across town.
Thankfully, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker have a solution waiting in the alley behind Studio C: the Lengthy Immediate Motion Object, or L.I.M.O. That acronym is perfection.
