Disney Legend William “Sully” Sullivan Dies at 88
William “Sully” Sullivan has passed away. The Disney Legend began his Disney career in 1955 as a Jungle Cruise ticket-taker. He was inspired to join the company while watching Disneyland’s opening ceremonies on TV. “The following Saturday I went down and applied for a job. Monday I quit Northrop Aircraft, and Tuesday I reported to work as a ticket-taker at the Jungle Cruise,” Sullivan said.
He became a Jungle Cruise skipper, met his future wife, and was promoted to operations supervisor while at Disneyland. Later, he assisted with the pageantry at the 1960 Winter Olympics, worked at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair, and helped put on numerous movie premieres.

Sully helped build Walt Disney World
Sullivan was eventually assigned to the Walt Disney World Resort project. He created the resort’s first security force and contributed to operations for Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, and the Transportation and Ticket Center. He was also instrumental in developing Disney’s first hotel division.
Sullivan served as director of EPCOT Center operations before being named vice president of Magic Kingdom Park. He finished his 38-year career as a member of the Euro Disneyland (now Disneyland Paris) team.
Two windows on Magic Kingdom’s Main Street pay tribute to Sullivan. The first one is above the Crystal Arts shop. It lists the members of the Windermere Fraternal Hall: Sully, Bob Allen, Pete Crimmings, Dick Evans, Bill Hoelscher, and Bob Matheison. The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor has a window that reads “Sully’s Safaris & Guide Service / Chief Guide / Bill Sullivan.” Sullivan loved hunting and fishing.
