What Happens When It Rains at Universal Kids Resort?

Universal Kids Resort has been open for almost three months, and so far, the weather has been stuck on “brutally hot.” There have been one or two minor storms, but little in the way of measurable rain or severe weather.

That’s all changing this week. The remnants of Hurricane Polo are bringing rain, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures to North Texas. Yes, it took a hurricane from the Pacific Ocean to finally water my lawn.

Rain doesn’t automatically mean a lost park day. But with UKR’s outdoor rides, play areas, and character encounters, it’s a good idea to set some expectations before arriving.

What happens if it rains?

Universal Kids Resort operates rain or shine. The park doesn’t offer ticket refunds or rain checks simply because it rains, so bring ponchos, an umbrella, a change of clothes, and backup shoes. Dry socks work wonders for morale.

But the park being open doesn’t mean everything will keep running. A Team Member confirmed that outdoor attractions and entertainment will close when lightning is detected within five miles of the park. That means experiences may pause even when it isn’t raining. High winds and other unsafe conditions can also interrupt operations.

I experienced a lightning pause one night this summer, about an hour before the park was supposed to close. Universal kept the park open about 20 minutes late to give guests a little more time to ride. Don’t count on that happening every time it storms, but Team Members want you to have a great time.

All of Universal Kids Resort’s rides are outdoors. Even if they continue operating during showers, expect to get wet. Outdoor character encounters may also pause, so a rainy visit could include fewer opportunities to meet your kids’ favorites.

Three shows offer some protection from the weather: Trollstastic: Concert Countdown, King Trollex Techno Dance Party, and Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day. Their venues are indoors or covered, making them potential options when showers arrive.

Covered doesn’t necessarily mean weatherproof, though. Mama Luna’s takes place in the small, open-sided Puss in Boots Theater, where wind-driven rain could affect or cancel a performance. Sideways showers could also interfere with Trollstastic. Having a roof helps, but it doesn’t guarantee the show will go on.

Gabby’s Dollhouse Dance Party takes place outdoors in the Isle of Curiosity. Expect that show to be affected by rain, especially when wet surfaces would make performing unsafe for Gabby and her dancers.

You can dry off in the park’s restaurants, most of which are indoors. Trolls Eatz is well covered, but wind could be an issue while you’re enjoying one of their delicious pizzas. You can also take refuge in the hotel, either in the lobby or the Curiosity Café. You’ll need to leave the park to get there, however.

You can still have a great visit even with showers in the forecast. The question is: how flexible is your family? A passing shower is one thing. Several hours of weather-related closures are another, especially if you’re visiting for just one day.

If your dates are flexible, watch the forecast before buying tickets. If they aren’t, arrive prepared to take breaks and adjust your plans.

What about severe weather?

Universal has a separate policy for natural disasters and declared states of emergency. Those circumstances are different from an ordinary rainy park day.

If a natural disaster occurs or a state of emergency is declared in the Dallas/Frisco area or your place of residence within seven days of arrival, contact Universal. You can cancel or reschedule without having to pay cancellation or change fees.

That includes vacation packages, hotel-only accommodations, and theme park tickets booked directly with Universal Kids Resort. Airline cancellation and change fees may still apply.

Guests who booked through a third party should contact their vendor about their cancellation and rescheduling policies. Universal’s policy also includes exceptions, including certain special events and group bookings, so review their terms before changing your plans.

North Texas occasionally gets weather that requires more than a poncho. We’re known for winter ice storms. We experienced one last January, forcing the metroplex to shut down for several days.

In the spring, it’s the possibility of hail, strong winds, and tornado warnings.

Now that I’ve scared you, don’t let the possibility of bad weather ruin your vacation before you ever get here. Keep an eye on the forecast, have a plan, and then go enjoy yourself. If severe weather does arrive, listen to Team Member instructions.

Pack for wet (or cold) weather, leave room in the schedule for breaks, and understand that some experiences may have to wait for another visit. You may still have a great day. I love rainy days in the parks, even if they come with fewer rides and multiple socks.
