Cooler Weather Brings More Energy to Universal Kids Resort

Universal Kids Resort felt different this morning, especially for a Monday. The parking lot was fuller than it is on school days. Inside the gates, the park had energy. I can’t say definitively say the weather was the reason, but it was one of the first mornings of fall that actually felt like fall. So, yeah. It was the weather.

Mondays have typically been slow since school started in mid-August. It’s been great for those who want to slam rides, but it doesn’t exactly create a theme park atmosphere. In particular, UKR’s interactive shows feed off crowds. Today, they had one.

Trollstastic: Concert Countdown had a big audience, with plenty of kids dancing on the floor in front of the stage. King Trollex’s Techno Dance Party was fuller than I’ve ever seen it on a weekday morning. I had to dodge several kids sprinting around the dance hall.

About a dozen families waited to meet Tango, one of Jurassic World’s baby velociraptors. Gabby’s Dollhouse Dance Party also drew a crowd, and many guests stayed afterward for photos with Gabby and her friends. Every character interaction I saw had a line. That hasn’t been the case on most of my weekday visits lately.

It’s not hard to see why weekday attendance has been low. According to AccuWeather, Frisco had 11 days at or above 100 degrees in July, 26 in August, and another 10 in September. August alone had a run of 22 straight 100-degree days. Heat indexes have been even worse.

Despite the heat, Fridays and weekends have brought crowds. When I visited on a Saturday a week ago, wait times were high, the splash pads were packed, and Team Members had to close character lines so performers could take a break from the heat. But weekdays have been a different story.

I’ve spoken with dozens of local families who said they were waiting for temperatures to drop before visiting. I can’t tell you how many of them came today, or whether the weather was the reason. But the cool morning brought out the best in this park.

One Monday isn’t a trend. We’re supposed to hit 95 tomorrow. But days in the 70s are coming, and maybe some bigger weekday crowds along with them.
