Universal Studios Submits Plans for Bedford Theme Park and Resort

Universal Studios has submitted plans for its Bedford theme park and resort to the UK government. Specifically, the company submitted a Special Development Order (SDO) to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

An SDO is used for projects of national significance or those that might be challenging to approve through typical local channels. I’d say a Universal Studios theme park meets both of those standards.

Universal’s application includes “an Environmental Statement, Planning Statement, and Design and Access Statement.” It’s sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Universal Destinations & Experiences shared a local letter highlighting the latest developments. Here is an excerpt from that release:

“Our request for planning permission is for an entertainment resort complex featuring a world-class theme park with several themed lands, visitor accommodation, as well as a range of retail, dining, and entertainment uses. The development will have a transformative impact on Bedford and the UK economy; it will generate nearly £50 billion of economic benefit and create 28,000 jobs.”

According to Bedford Today, 92% of the community supports the project. That’s an incredible number and no doubt makes Universal’s executives very happy with their decision to expand to England.
