TheWrap: New Details Revealed for Magic Kingdom Villains Land
After nearly two years of limited details, a new report from TheWrap offers the clearest picture yet of what may be coming to Villains Land at Magic Kingdom. Reporter Drew Taylor revealed details that align with what Len Testa recently shared, that Imagineers have been tasked with creating something bigger and bolder. Taylor also said that Disney wants a land with a broader appeal.
Incoming CEO Josh D’Amaro originally announced the Villains land at the 2024 D23 Expo. It was a wow moment, even if it was light on specifics. The concept art did the heavy lifting that night. And as is often the case with concepts, they’re easily scrapped.
That’s reportedly what happened in late 2025, when Imagineers were notified that the project would be reimagined.
According to Taylor, Imagineers were initially inspired by Dark Universe, the Universal Monsters–themed area at Universal’s Epic Universe. Now, Disney wants to pivot from that shadowy – and at times terrifying – space to one that’s more welcoming to all ages. Again, Epic provides the blueprint in the form of Isle of Berk.
Both lands are phenomenal achievements, but Berk is by far more inviting. And it offers something few lands can boast, a full-day experience. Thrills, humor, character interactions, live entertainment, family rides, abundant dining, and wide-open spaces that encourage guests to just hang out. It feels alive.
Most importantly, it has something for every age group. Dark Universe, by design, does not.
Sure, letting Imagineers explore the darker side of Disney’s villains would thrill plenty of fans, but it would terrify just as many. If Disney ever built a villains-centric fifth gate, including that intensity would make sense in some areas. Inside Magic Kingdom? They’re now choosing not to skew that dark.
That doesn’t mean this land is getting watered down.
A Maleficent E-Ticket
According to TheWrap, a large-scale indoor attraction themed to Maleficent will anchor Villains Land. The iconic baddie was originally going to be the focus of an intense thrill coaster that wove through the land.
Now, she’s getting a boat ride that could feature elements from Shanghai Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, one of Imagineering’s crowning achievements. Taylor reports the attraction is intended to rival Radiator Springs Racers and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in scale and complexity.
The switch from coaster to dark ride might have been done for creative reasons. But they also make financial sense for Disney. This attraction is destined for Lightning Lane Single Pass. Guests will happily pay the upcharge if the ride offers Rise-level immersion. And making it an indoor attraction means the weather can’t wreak havoc on ride ops.

The land will still feature a roller coaster, just not one that features thorns and adult-sized thrills. The new plan is for a family-friendly attraction themed to The Emperor’s New Groove. The ride will center on Yzma and Kronk and their chaotic laboratory coaster sequence
Yes, a “pull the lever” moment is in the works.
This is another sign that Disney wants the land to lean into adventure and humor rather than terror. And a coaster that families can ride together does far more for capacity than one built purely for thrill seekers.
An Ursula spinner
Taylor also reports that Ursula will headline a spinner-style flat ride. It won’t be the marquee draw, but it’s an important addition for younger guests (and for adults who still enjoy flying in circles). This will help balance the land.
A Hades dinner show
Taylor also reports that the Villains land will include a Hades-themed dinner show. Pain and Panic will entertain as guests enjoy a prix fixe meal. Other villains will join in on the fun, as well.
These changes will almost certainly impact timelines. Taylor speculates the land may not debut until 2029. Yes, Rivers of America has been drained. Tom Sawyer Island is gone. The site is physically ready. But creatively? Imagineers are once again in planning mode. And that’s never a bad thing.
Magic Kingdom isn’t a testing ground. It’s Florida’s flagship. A Villains land can’t be just another expansion. It has to resonate with families, thrill seekers, and lifelong Disney fans alike. This one has to hit the mark.
