Robert Downey Jr. Named Godparent of Disney Adventure

Robert Downey Jr. is adding “cruise ship godparent” to his résumé.

Disney announced that the actor will serve as the official godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. It sets sail on its maiden voyage next month from its home port in Singapore.

The Adventure is unlike any other Disney Cruise Line ship. Disney purchased the unfinished vessel from Genting Hong Kong after the company went bankrupt. Meyer Werft, Disney’s go-to shipbuilder, moved the Adventure to its shipyard in Wismar, Germany, where they – along with Disney Imagineers – transformed it into something worthy of Captain Mickey.

Downey is a fitting choice to serve as the Adventure’s godparent. The ship features plenty of Marvel-themed entertainment, including Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run (a coaster at Marvel Landing), the “Avengers Assemble!” live stage show, and the Marvel WEB Workshop inside the Oceaneer Club. He’s humbled by the honor:

“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest.”

Appointing a ship’s godparent – a long-standing maritime tradition – is meant to bring good fortune to the vessel before its maiden voyage. Other notable godparents include Oprah Winfrey, Dame Judi Dench, and Julie Andrews.
