Join the Wilderness Explorers in Animal Kingdom

When my family goes to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, my four kids have an agenda: become Wilderness Explorers for the day. That’s right, you can become an honorary Wilderness Explorer while learning about wildlife and earning badges. Okay, they’re stickers, but it’s still fun!

The Wilderness Explorers is a free, self-paced interactive experience (think scavenger hunt) at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Kids of all ages can complete activities to earn over 30 badges at various stations around the park.

Getting started with the Wilderness Explorers

Disney's Animal Kingdom Wilderness Explorers Headquarters

The first thing you’ll need to do is find the Wilderness Explorers Headquarters, conveniently located on the right side of the bridge as you enter Discovery Island. Don’t worry if you miss it. You can start your journey at any of the Troop Leader locations in the park. Wherever you begin, you’ll be sworn in by a Troop Leader who will ask you to recite the Wilderness Explorer motto:

A Wilderness Explorer is friend to all, be it plants or fish or tiny mole.

Earn those badges!

After joining the troop, you’ll need to be on the lookout for Wilderness Explorer stations, marked by the “WE” symbol seen above (you can also find clues to their locations in your handbook). This logo will be accompanied by an image of the badge that can be earned at each station. A Badge Guide (decked out in a uniform, sash, and satchel) will greet you and lead you through an activity that deepens your understanding of the natural world and how humans affect it. The Badge Guides tailor these short experiences to match the age of the Explorers. At the end of your interaction, you’ll earn your badge (sticker) that you can place in your Handbook.

You don’t have to earn all the available badges in a single visit. You will still achieve a Wilderness Explorer ranking based on the number of badges earned. Earn five badges to reach Tadpole, 10 badges for Minnow, and 20 for Fish. You’ll be a Senior Wilderness Explorer once you earn them all.

Caw! Caw! Roar!

Wilderness Explorer call

My kids enjoy scavenger hunts and this one is a favorite. The Wilderness Explorers Program will take you all over Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park and guarantee you’ll finish your day with newfound knowledge. Remember, adventure is out there!
