Experiencing DinoLand U.S.A.’s Closing Weekend at Animal Kingdom

The countdown has officially hit extinction. DINOSAUR and DinoLand U.S.A. have closed their doors for the final time. I was fortunate to spend the closing weekend in person, photographing my final visits. I logged nearly 15 hours inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom as the reign of the dinosaurs came to an end.

While the air was freezing, the emotion was anything but. I met several fans and experienced their excitement firsthand. Bundled guests shared memories and smiles through shivered breaths. Decades of love and appreciation culminated in this final farewell.

This was my first experience with a closing-day attraction. After learning what DINOSAUR meant to so many people, I better understand the distances theme park fans travel to experience their favorite attractions again and again, sometimes for one last time. The overlooked and misunderstood can also be the most compelling. Nowhere is that more true than DinoLand, U.S.A.

My fingers were numb, but my camera was always ready. This weekend, I set out to capture the last remnants of my favorite props and scenery. Instead, I walked away with something far more valuable. My heartfelt thanks to every DINOSAUR fan. Your love and excitement made this weekend unforgettable.
