Dr. Mark Penning Leaving Disney for Director Role at North Carolina Zoo
Disney’s loss is North Carolina’s gain. Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, is set to become the new director of the North Carolina Zoo.
During his time at Disney, Penning oversaw animal care at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, and Disney parks worldwide. He also built a following by regularly sharing baby animal updates on social media, an easy way to win over just about everyone.

Beyond Disney, Penning served as CEO of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research in Durban, president of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and a board member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He currently sits on the board of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and serves as a Trustee of Wild Welfare.
Penning shared the following about his new role:
“I am very excited to be moving to the beautiful state of North Carolina and joining the fabulous team at the North Carolina Zoo. I have long admired the zoo with its stunningly picturesque setting, modern animal habitats, engaging experiences for visitors, and talented team of zoo professionals. They have created a world-class destination where families can connect with nature and with each other and experience the joy and wonder of being outdoors. It is an honor and a privilege for me to join the team.”
We’ll miss Dr. Mark at Disney, but something tells me the baby animal content isn’t going anywhere.
