Disneyland’s Electric Autopia Cars Could Arrive in Early 2027

Disneyland’s Electric Autopia Cars Could Arrive in Early 2027

Two years ago, Disney announced that the gas-powered cars at Disneyland’s Autopia would eventually be replaced with electric or hybrid vehicles. Now, thanks to a new report from The Orange County Register, we finally have a clearer timeline. Disneyland officials are reportedly targeting an early 2027 debut for the updated vehicles.

According to the report, Disney is already developing and testing prototype electric cars for the attraction. That news should make legendary Imagineer Bob Gurr happy. When he first heard Disney was considering an electric conversion, his response was perfectly blunt:

“Get rid of those God-awful gasoline fumes.”

Both Autopia and the Tomorrowland Speedway at Walt Disney World are long overdue for this kind of update. On hot, windless afternoons, walking past those race tracks can feel like standing in the middle of a hundred leaf blowers. The drone of the engines and the smell of unburnt fuel don’t exactly scream “tomorrow’s tech.”

Electric vehicles won’t transform Autopia into a thrill ride, but they should make the experience more pleasant for everyone riding or walking by. Less noise, no exhaust, and fewer headaches are all good things.

The change also supports Disneyland’s broader environmental goals. Removing gasoline-powered engines from Autopia will help Disney achieve its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2030.
