Crews Demolish Entrance Concrete at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Magic Kingdom guests will enjoy brand-new pavement beneath their feet when Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopens this spring. Crews have demolished the attraction’s entrance concrete, leaving Tomorrowland looking a little rough around the edges for now. Fortunately, @Thesolardude captured the demolition while riding the Tomorrowland PeopleMover earlier this week. His photo shows just how extensive the work is.

Walt Disney Imagineering recently filed a permit to install a new exterior sign for the attraction. Design Communications Ltd. will handle that work. While that alone could explain some concrete removal, the scope of this demo is more substantial.

There are a couple of possibilities for that. Imagineers may be using the downtime to replace the existing pavement with themed concrete. It’s also possible this is an opportunity to address Tomorrowland’s drainage issues, something Aahs n Oohs keyed in on when I shared the photo with him.

The land has a reputation for flooding during heavy rain, as my family learned firsthand when my son needed replacement Emporium socks after one especially wet visit. A lot of people were crowding the sock shelves that day. But soggy feet didn’t stop us from having a great day in the rain.

Scott’s photo shows that the demolition exposed at least one Tomorrowland drainage pipe. That could be coincidental, but here’s hoping we see fewer floods in the future.

Inside the attraction, Imagineers have been busy installing new ride vehicles with more responsive blasters, a new hyperspace tunnel scene, and Buddy. The updated Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin opens this spring.
