Coastal Steel Attached to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Work in New Permit

Walt Disney World has filed a Notice of Commencement for work on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. The permit comes from Disney’s Facility Asset Management (FAM) division, not Walt Disney Imagineering, so this likely isn’t tied to the upcoming roller coaster retheme. Still, the listed contractor makes it newsworthy.

First, let’s talk about who filed the permit. Disney’s FAM team oversees maintenance, repairs, and infrastructure improvements across the resort. That can mean anything from preventative upkeep to substantial refurbishments. We’re not sure where this permit falls in that spectrum, but seeing as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will only be down for a few months as crews transform the ride from Aerosmith to the Muppets, don’t expect anything close to a track replacement.

The permit tasks Coastal Steel with “general construction.” That’s typical, vague language for these things. Coastal, however, is no lightweight. The company has worked on major Walt Disney World projects like TRON Lightcycle / Run, Expedition Everest, Galaxy’s Edge, and even the former Sorcerer Mickey Hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. More recently, they’ve been heavily involved in the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment.

So, Coastal Steel showing up on a Walt Disney World filing is always worth a second look. Seeing them hired by FAM, however, suggests this leans more toward structural updates than show scenes.

Should I have done my usual early-morning Orange County permit scan, said “cool”, and moved on? Possibly. But with Aerosmith officially packing up in 10 days and 21 hours, even a vague “general construction” filing feels like part of the story.
