Bob Gurr Gets His Autopia Driver’s License

Bob Gurr received his Autopia driver’s license recently. The Imagineering legend designed the original vehicles for the ride, so we doubt he had to pay the $10 fee.
Gurr explains how he got the job as Autopia’s car designer in “Let’s Ride,” the latest episode in the We Call It Imagineering series. “I was hired as a body designer. Walt assumed if I designed bodies, I [did] mechanical design. And I didn’t. I shut up and started it anyway. So that was the very first challenge, that we start literally from zero for this car for [the] Autopia ride,” Gurr said. So how did he rise to the challenge?
“Funny thing was, you know what made it easy? I never went to engineering school. I didn’t know you can’t do it.”

Autopia was a success, and it wasn’t long before Gurr was tasked with building the Disneyland Monorail, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and a hundred more attractions. Bob Gurr is an absolute legend. And now he’s a licensed Autopia driver.
