Universal Kids Resort Begins Enforcing No Outside Food Policy

Guests hoping to bring food into Universal Kids Resort may be out of luck. Universal has begun enforcing its policy prohibiting outside food at the Frisco theme park.

During the park’s first few weeks of operation, guests were allowed to enter with their own food. That’s according to several accounts on social media. I also saw plenty of families eating snacks purchased outside the park. We never tested the policy ourselves, mainly because we no longer have young children.

Here is the exact language from the Universal Kids Resort FAQ:

Can I bring my own food and beverages into the theme park?
No food (sack lunch, snacks, or meals) may be brought into the park. Personal water bottles are allowed for complimentary refills inside the park.

A reader alerted me to the policy’s enforcement yesterday. I spoke with Guest Services Team Members who confirmed that outside food is no longer being allowed through the gates.

Guests with food allergies may still bring their own food into Universal Kids Resort. Guest Services recommends calling before your visit so those dietary needs can be documented. That number is 888-331-9105. Permission can also be granted on the day of your visit, but arranging it in advance will you inside the park more quickly.

Universal Orlando Resort has a similar policy, though its website offers more details. The resort prohibits outside food and beverages, alcohol, glass containers, and large coolers. There are exceptions:

• Bottled water, limited to 2 liters per guest
• Food required for medical purposes
• Medically indicated nutritional supplements
• Food required for special dietary needs
• Baby food and formula
• Soft-sided coolers measuring no more than 8.5 inches wide, 6 inches high, and 6 inches deep

Again, I rarely bring food into theme parks, but I do remember eating a cereal bar during our most recent visit to Epic Universe. I like living on the edge.

Plenty of other guests do the same. Reddit is filled with accounts of people bringing food into Universal Orlando’s parks without a problem. That was the case at Universal Kids Resort during its first few weeks of operation.

Kids don’t always care what’s on the menu

If any theme park should make room for outside snacks, it’s one designed around young children. Food allergies should absolutely be accommodated, but picky eaters deserve some leeway, too. Anyone who has raised a toddler knows that the wrong meal or snack can derail an afternoon. Add heat, crowds, and sensory overload, and everyone involved may be in for a long day.

Universal Kids Resort offers several kid-friendly meals, but “kid-friendly” is not universal. My son refused to eat pizza for years. Other children might not love chicken tenders, hamburgers, or anything unfamiliar.

Sometimes kids just need their usual snack

And this isn’t just about meals. Kids need their snacks. A child accustomed to eating plain Cheerios or orange slices every afternoon is unlikely to be persuaded by a theme park’s outside-food policy.

For now, our recommendation is to call Universal Kids Resort before your visit and request permission to bring any food your child needs to comfortably make it through the day.
