Sleigh the Ride: Fresh Ideas to Update the Jingle Cruise

I love the Jingle Cruise, the Jungle Cruise’s holiday overlay. But I think there is room for improvement. The queue is consistently well-decorated, and the skippers (and their jokes) are always great, but I feel the ride itself could use even more. More Christmas, more tinsel, more ornaments. Why? Not every scene is themed. It feels only half full of the Christmas spirit.

I’ve been inspired by Inspiration Falls and decided to go… further into exploring what could be added to Jingle Cruise. So, as I’m known to do, I came up with tiny artwork to highlight where this attraction can be enhanced with more theming (or, in the case of a few scenes, any theming).

First up, “Boats, Baits, and Bites,” a scene unique to Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise. I changed the sign to read “Boats, Bells, and Lights” and updated the menu to include Christmas offerings. The sign at the hut now reads “Gone Sledding” instead of “Gone Fishing.”

I added ornaments and décor to the fishing nets. Christmas lights have been strung throughout. I thought about adding plastic reindeer lawn decorations to the canoes, you know, like they’re actually pulling the boats.

Skippers already make Christmas-themed jokes about the crocodiles. Why not add visual aids to make those jokes hit even harder? If we’re warned that Ginger “snaps,” I want to see Ginger snapping gingerbread men cookies in half.

Back when Disneyland had its own Jingle Cruise, the python was decorated with Christmas ribbons. For Magic Kingdom’s ride, I gave the giant snake a Santa hat. Mistletoe hangs off its tail. The tree is also now decorated for the holidays.

The show scenes added in 2021 haven’t really gotten the Christmas treatment. So I fixed that. For much of the year, the chimps hanging in the sinking boat play with paint. Starting in November, they’ll be decorating Christmas cookies instead. Understandably, they’re pretty messy. Frosting and sprinkles cover the boat, which has been renamed the Cookie Maiden. We pay homage to Disneyland’s piranhas by adding them to the side of the boat as frosting.

The temple scenes get the overlay treatment, but not enough for me. This next one is an easy one. We’re swapping out the cobra statue’s orb for a glowing star.

The Trader Sam scene was always themed for Christmas it was replaced with the gift shop. So I paid tribute by renaming the space “Trader Samta’s Workshop.” The “back in 5 min” sign has been changed to “See ya next year.” The monkeys are, appropriately, Trader Samta’s elves.

Some of the elves are wrapping the gift shop items while others fight over a Christmas sweater. The photo sign now reads “X-mas Photos”. I also placed a tiny Christmas tree in the shop. It’s decorated with little ornaments inspired by the Jungle Cruise: tiny oars, exotic animals, bones, and a light-up Jungle Cruise Boat.

Up until now, we’ve talked about light retheming touches. But now we’re going big. The empty rock formation needs serious love. We’re going to give it some by adding gingerbread creations. First up, a boat (the Ginger Belle), complete with a gingerbread skipper!

I know it can’t be edible like the gingerbread house in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion overlay. It’ll need to be made out of something that can withstand Florida’s humidity. But with that prop, Skippers can tell jokes like this:

“See that gingerbread boat? Skipper Felix baked it. It’s the first thing on the river the flies won’t eat.”What Jingle Cruise Skippers would say if I were in charge

Finally, here’s a sketch I did of Jingle Cruise Past, Present (wink) and Future. The past includes the show scenes and décor I miss, while the present is the current state of the Jingle Cruise. And the future drawings are simply my wish list.

I’d love to see Disney decorate the elephants like they used to do in Disneyland. Give them halos and angel wings or dress them up as reindeer. I also miss the giant spider web in the temple. Bring that back and have it spell out “Merry Christmas!” Want an impossible one? Make the ninth wonder of the world the backside of wrapping paper. Okay, that might be a stretch.
