Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run Connecting to Smugglers Gambit in Fortnite

A new connected experience is coming to Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Starting August 16, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will connect with Smugglers Gambit, a new island in the Fortnite game.

Disney teased that this is just the beginning of what’s possible in a combined Disney/Fortnite universe, calling it an example of how it can connect its physical attractions with digital experiences.

Collecting crates in Smugglers Run

Guests wanting to take part will need to link their Disney and Epic Games accounts. Then they can accept a special side mission while waiting in line using the Disneyland or My Disney Experience apps. Or they can do it ahead of time in Fortnite. Those not eligible to link their accounts will instead receive a code redeemable in the game.

Once in the cockpit, riders will have to collect crates for Hondo Ohnaka, earning rewards along the way. One of those rewards is a Forsworn Trooper Outfit.

The Smugglers Gambit island

Smugglers Gambit is the new Fortnite island developed by Disney Games and Digital Entertainment with help from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Imagineering.

The story takes place around Mersa Veta Station on Ord Ryla. Players can team up for cooperative missions, battle pirates and Imperial remnants, encounter wildlife, and unlock gear on the Outer Rim planet.

Players don’t need to have ridden Smugglers Run to begin their mission in Fortnite.

Linking theme park attractions with digital gaming is such a great idea. If it’s successful, Disney could bring it to other attractions. I could see it working on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, WEB SLINGERS, Toy Story Mania, or any other attraction that involves scoring.

But maybe scoring doesn’t even matter. Imagine players unlocking rewards based on their Star Tours destinations or what song they get on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. There are endless possibilities. I might have to plug my Xbox back in.
