Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day Is Perfect for Young Theme Park Fans
Mama Luna is no stranger to Universal’s theme parks. One of the stars of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the eccentric cat collector already has a home in DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida. Mama Luna’s Feline Fiesta invites guests into her house, where her many cats appear on interactive screens.
But Universal Kids Resort gives the cat lady a much bigger role.
Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day! is a live puppet show performed several times each day in the Puss in Boots Theater. The beautifully themed amphitheater brings Spanish mission vibes to the park’s most striking land.
It’s a small venue, but that’s part of its charm. Guests sit close to the action, with the performers working just a few feet from the front row.
Those performers include Mama Luna, Del Mar’s cat-hating governor, and puppeteers operating Perrito and Puss in Boots. Several two-dimensional cats also make appearances.
The puppeteers are front and center throughout the show. I find myself watching them just as much as their characters. They add plenty to the show through their reactions and side-eyed glances.
At one point, Puss’ puppeteer trades the lifelike character for a 2-D version, spinning him wildly while sprinting across the stage. I have many blurry photos of that action.
The Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day plot
The story is simple. Del Mar’s governor hates cats, probably because he’s severely allergic to them. Perrito, for reasons known only to Perrito, invited him to Adopt a Kitty Day at Mama Luna’s cat sanctuary.
To prevent the governor from discovering the many cats in attendance, Mama Luna recruits the audience to impersonate dogs. The children are always up for this, barking loudly in a doomed attempt to convince the man standing inside a cat sanctuary that no cats are present.
I won’t spoil what happens next, but the plan doesn’t exactly work. Puss in Boots takes charge, tackling what Universal calls his “greatest adventure yet.” That might be overselling the action a tad, but it works for the kids in the room.
After the show, the cast invites the audience to the stage for photos. Some children get a little too excited and climb up there with the performers. Team Members are always kind as they coax them back to the floor.
Mama Luna’s Adopt a Kitty Day! doesn’t have the scale of Epic Universe’s The Untrainable Dragon or Universal Studios Florida’s The Bourne Stuntacular. It isn’t trying to. This is a small, charming show created for younger children beginning their theme park journeys.
