Haunted Mansion Parlor Sculpture Honors Imagineer Rolly Crump

Disney Imagineers are honoring one of their own onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship’s Haunted Mansion Parlor will feature the melting bust of Rolly Crump, an animator and Imagineer who played a major role in designing Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. Rolly’s bust includes a plaque that reads, “Brother Roland — Forever Revered for Embracing the Weird.”

In addition to the Haunted Mansion, Rolly also developed a companion attraction called “Museum of the Weird.” In it was a character whose face appeared to be melting like a candle. Imagineers ran with that idea to come up with a fitting tribute to Rolly. Unfortunately, the Museum of the Weird was scrapped after Walt’s death.

“This stuff is really weird, Rolly.”

Rolly earned his nickname from Walt Disney himself. His work as an Imagineer is impressive. In addition to Haunted Mansion, he also helped design the Enchanted Tiki Room, it’s a small world, and the Adventureland Bazaar. He also contributed to Magic Kingdom designs. He finished his Disney career as an EPCOT Imagineer.

Roland “Rolly” Crump passed away in 2023.
