Galaxy’s Edge Timeline Shift Explained: TIE Echelon, Outfits, and Backstories
Earlier today, Disney announced a big shift for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The land is moving away from its once-rigid timeline, opening the door for more characters and storylines to appear on Disneyland’s Batuu. Thanks to a new article on StarWars.com, we’re getting an even better look yet at what that evolution looks like, and how Imagineering plans to make it work without breaking canon.
Asa Kalama, Vice President of Creative and Interactive Experiences at Walt Disney Imagineering, says Batuu was never meant to be frozen in time: “We’ve always seen Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as a platform for storytelling, a land that would continue to live and grow and evolve.”
So how exactly is Galaxy’s Edge evolving? In some very cool ways.
Darth Vader and Kylo Ren’s TIE Echelon
Perhaps the most notable change is Darth Vader’s arrival on Batuu, where he’s searching for Luke Skywalker. But there’s an obvious question: how can Darth Vader occupy an area long associated with Kylo Ren and still be considered canon? The TIE Echelon is Kylo Ren’s ship, after all.
Kalama explains why it works. “One of the lesser-known facts about the TIE Echelon is that it’s actually an Imperial-era ship. It carries the same color and markings of all the TIEs from that era,” he said. He equates Kylo owning the vessel to someone in the real world owning a vintage car. “Canonically, it aligns with the new, updated timeline we’re celebrating now.”
That one works for me.
Throwback looks
Creative teams are leaning heavily into nostalgia. Rather than inventing entirely new costumes for Han Solo and Leia Organa, they’re pulling directly from Star Wars films, comic books, and even video games.
Disney Live Entertainment, Imagineering, and Lucasfilm collaborated on the couple’s looks. Han will wear his iconic vest, while Leia dons a “battle-ready white outfit.” Her costume draws inspiration from her comic book appearances and her look in Star Wars Battlefront II, with hair styled similarly to The Empire Strikes Back.
A new backstory
So why are the Empire and Rebels even on Batuu? The answer is coming in comic book form. Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics are teaming up on a new series that will provide context for Batuu’s new residents.
Meanwhile, characters from beyond the original trilogy, The Mandalorian, Grogu, and Ahsoka, will appear in the marketplace. Rey is moving closer to Rise of the Resistance, which is not receiving any timeline updates.
New merchandise and shops
We’re also learning more about retail changes coming to Galaxy’s Edge. First Order Cargo is being reimagined as Black Spire Surplus, a new shop offering both Rebel and Imperial gear. Matt Martin, a Lucasfilm creative executive, shared the shop’s backstory:
“The shop also has a rich backstory: Martin explains that Black Spire Surplus was founded by two former clone troopers who fought alongside each other in the Clone Wars and became close friends. Years later, one of those soldiers joined the Empire and served as an Imperial stormtrooper, while the other signed up with the Rebellion. But as they got older, they decided to retire and team up as friends and business partners, opening their new venture on Batuu.”
Martin also revealed that Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities will receive new items, including “Easter eggs that people will recognize from some of the more recent live-action TV series.”
As we noted in our original article, these changes have the potential to truly unlock Galaxy’s Edge. What’s encouraging is how thoughtfully Imagineers are approaching the update. Disney isn’t simply dropping new characters into the land. They’re building new stories around them.
