Former Kilimanjaro Safaris Star Little Red Returns to Animal Kingdom
Little Red is back at Kilimanjaro Safaris in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Well, sort of. The baby animatronic elephant – a major player on the ride from 1998 to 2012 – has resurfaced in the Caring for Giants viewing area behind the Kilimanjaro Safaris elephant habitat. Thanks to Nick, a Safaris Cast Member, for the heads up.
Update (May 3, 2026): I spotted Little Red while riding Kilimanjaro Safaris last week. She’s noticeable, but only if you know where to look. When you arrive at the second elephant habitat (the one with the females), look to the left.

Little Red was part of the original Kilimanjaro Safaris storyline, which was a lot more intense than what guests experience today. In the earliest version, her mother, Big Red, was killed by poachers. That plotline was quickly toned down to her being wounded.
Guests would follow along as Harambe Wildlife Reserve warden Wilson Matua searched for Little Red in his Jeep, SIMBA-1. By the end of the ride, we’d spot her safely loaded onto a truck.
Over time, the story kept getting softened until it was removed entirely in 2012. These days, Kilimanjaro Safaris plays it straight, with guides leading unscripted tours focused on animal education rather than dodging unseen poachers.
So yes, Little Red is technically back at Animal Kingdom. But don’t expect a grand reintroduction. She now sits inside the fenced Caring for Giants area, alongside a simple plaque:

Before her return to Animal Kingdom, Little Red was tucked away at Property Control inside Cast Connections, the Cast Member-exclusive store in Winter Garden, Florida.
If you’re hoping for a good look when riding the Safaris, you’ll probably need binoculars or a telephoto lens. So we recommend booking Caring for Giants instead. It’s an excellent, affordable backstage tour.
