Disney’s Boulder Ridge Deluxe Studio Tour

You might remember that we visited Boulder Ridge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last fall. Our friends invited us to join them in a 2-Bedroom Villa for a few days. We quickly said yes. But they had to return to reality before us, so we moved into a Deluxe Studio down the hall to finish our vacation.

The Boulder Ridge renovated Studio is fantastic in just about every way. The theming is on point for a 19th-century railroad hotel. Honestly, I have no idea if that’s true. But the room’s decor feels appropriate for a Western US resort. If I had walked into this Studio before seeing our 2-Bedroom, I would’ve been even more impressed. It’s just hard for Studios to compete with DVC’s larger Villas.

Before I go any further… if you ever do a split stay, be sure to start with the Studio before moving to larger accommodations. Trust me on this one.

The room’s vinyl “wood” floor is a significant upgrade from the drab carpet this resort used to feature. The Studio’s color palette works extremely well with the various woods used throughout the room. Overall, it’s much brighter than the pre-renovation rooms.

The biggest upgrade has to be the addition of the Murphy bed. DVC got it right when they moved away from their dilapidated sofas a few years ago. The new sofa/bed hybrid is a far superior quality and adds visual interest to the room.

Our Studio was the first unit in the hall, so we had an extra window. That side of the room is a little less visually appealing than the rest, but the facade on the pull-down bed is a nice touch. And this is where the Boulder Ridge Deluxe Studio earns points. A Studio that sleeps five is a huge value for larger families. That third bed is also ideal for kids who may not want to sleep with their siblings. It won’t accommodate tall guests but works for most people.

Here is a list of the Walt Disney World DVC Studios that can accommodate five guests:

  • Beach Club Villas
  • Boardwalk Villas
  • Boulder Ridge Villas
  • Grand Floridian Villas
  • Polynesian Villas
  • Riviera

The bathroom

The bathroom is where this unit falls a little short. Like Boulder Ridge’s 2-Bedroom, the bathroom vanity is open to the rest of the room. My wife wakes before the rest of the family. Once those lights go on, the pillow goes over my head. DVC has added a sliding barn door to other properties. I wish they could’ve done that here, as well.

The lack of a second sink had us feeling a little cramped during our morning routines. I’m also very, very careful while shaving. It’s come to my attention that most people don’t enjoy seeing whiskers all over the counter and sink.

The shower does include a separate handheld sprayer in addition to the mounted shower head. H2O+ products are available in pump bottles mounted to the wall.

The kitchenette

I once again failed to photograph every part of the room. This time I missed out on the kitchenette, but you can see it in the bathroom mirror in the photo above. It is stocked with a mini refrigerator, sink, microwave oven, plastic utensils, disposable tableware, and a combination coffee maker with Joffrey’s Coffee and creamer. The coffee maker lets you brew a full pot or use single pods.

We always have milk, cereal, bottled water, and snacks delivered to the hotel. The kitchenette had no issues accommodating everything we needed.

Final thoughts

Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge

The Boulder Ridge Villas are the ideal location for families who appreciate a quiet life away from the parks. The grounds and views are stunning. The on-site food options are enjoyed by Disney guests and locals alike, so it has to be good. The two pools are some of the best at Disney World. It used to be easy to get DVC reservations at the 7-month mark. But I’m wondering if the recent upgrades will make Boulder Ridge one of the more difficult bookings to come by. I really hope not.
