Disney World Transportation Details Found in Google Maps

Google Maps shares real-time details about Walt Disney World transportation. I know! I’m as shocked as you! I wish I could say I discovered this on my own, but the credit goes to our friend Nate and his family. While waiting for a Saratoga Springs bus earlier today, he opened Google Maps and was greeted with way more information than he expected. See for yourself!

Disney Resort guests have long been able to see estimated bus times for their hotel in the My Disney Experience app. But that’s all that MDE shares. You won’t find info for other hotels, theme parks, or Disney Springs.

Google Maps offers way more, including details about Disney World buses, Monorails, ferry boats, water taxis, and the Skyliner. Departure times are shared in real-time. This is a game changer for people navigating Walt Disney World to make rope drop or dining reservations.

Here’s the simplest way to access the schedules. In Google Maps, search for a location inside Walt Disney World. Then look for the transportation icon near bus stops, Monorail stations, boat docks, or Skyliner stations. That icon is inexplicably tiny. Here’s an example of me searching Disney Springs:

Bus schedules are easy to navigate. The listed times are for departures, not arrivals.

You can also track Monorail and ferry departures. This can be helpful when deciding how to get to Magic Kingdom from the Transportation and Ticket Center.

And yes, Google Maps also tracks individual Skyliner gondolas! While that seems extreme, it does serve a purpose. Let’s say you want to ride Spaceship Earth before heading to Hollywood Studios. If the Skyliner were down, you’d never know it until you saw those stationary gondolas in person. But if you checked with Google, you’d know to head to the main exit and grab a bus, saving all those steps for more important things.

Is Google Maps’ data accurate?

I won’t be able to test the app for a few months, but our friends confirmed the listed times were extremely accurate:

“Tonight, Google Maps helped us decide whether to take the boat or a bus from Disney Springs to Saratoga Springs. We took the bus and arrived at our resort exactly when the app said we would. Earlier, we looked at both options and decided walking to DS was our best bet.”

On another occasion, they were waiting at a Hollywood Studios bus stop to return to their resort. Their bus arrived six minutes before its listed departure. Nate was sure they would leave ahead of schedule, but the bus departed on time thanks to a driver change. That was a telling moment for all of us.

Not all was perfect, however. Google Maps showed that a Saratoga Springs bus had departed Disney Springs shortly before Nate arrived at the stop. A full queue proved that wasn’t the case. Disney reroutes buses regularly, which may have been what happened that night, throwing off the data. That was the only instance in four days where the app was wrong. I’d call that a win!

Google Maps powers the maps found in MDE, so these features may be added to the Disney app at some point. I’ve reached out to Disney for more information. We’ll share any insights they provide. In the meantime, open up Google Maps and take control of your Disney World vacation!
