Disney Skyliner Accessibility
The Disney Skyliner at Walt Disney World is a unique and fun transportation option for families! It connects Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot with four resort hotels: Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach, and Riviera. The gondolas have a variety of decorative wraps representing beloved Disney characters. The Skyliner is also a great example of how Disney designs with accessibility in mind. There are, of course, a few considerations (and one huge advantage) you should know about before riding.
Consideration: physical accessibility & transferring

Accessing the Disney Skyliner with an ECV or a wheelchair is straightforward. Individual gondolas can accommodate both without transferring. Before entering the final boarding queue, inform a Cast Member (CM) that you will need an accessible car. You’ll be directed to a separate area. Every gondola includes bench seating for companions.
My favorite part of the Skyliner’s design is that accessible gondolas are stationary throughout the boarding process. They won’t merge with the main line of cars until occupants are fully situated and ready to go. This is particularly helpful for guests in ECVs or wheelchairs who need more time getting settled. Based on personal experience, having as much time as you need to board without feeling like you’re holding up the line removes a lot of stress.
Consideration: fear of heights

The Disney Skyliner is an aerial experience inside an enclosed gondola, traveling high above the ground. Individuals with an impactful fear of heights should avoid it. Individuals with a more moderate fear of heights may benefit from distracting strategies, such as enjoying preferred media on personal devices. Some individuals may also benefit from previewing ride videos online before riding.
Consideration: motion sickness
While traveling on the Disney Skyliner, you are subjected to rocking and other similar uncontrollable motions at a variety of very low speeds and inclines. Individuals who typically experience motion sickness should consider medicating or traveling a different way.
Consideration: heat sensitivity

Skyliner gondolas do not have air conditioning. When in motion, a steady breeze keeps things very comfortable inside the car. However, it can become a little uncomfortable when the Skyliner stops for an extended period. Individuals with heat sensitivities may be more comfortable riding the bus during warmer seasons.
Consideration: Skyliner downtime

The Skyliner may occasionally pause during your ride. In most cases, it will resume within a few seconds, but there is a chance you could remain stationary for longer periods. You may want to ensure that you have a variety of comfort and distraction items available if someone in your party has difficulty with delays.
The Skyliner is also subject to weather-related closures. You may need to exit the line and take an alternate mode of transportation with minimal warning. If someone in your party has difficulty with changes in predicted routines, preparation for this possibility may help ensure a more comfortable visit. This could be as simple as a “what-if” discussion prior to the trip (with verbal reminders during the trip) or as complex as a social story with pictures, depending on the needs of the individual.
Advantage: (relative) privacy

While you’ll typically enjoy a private Skyliner gondola, Cast Members will combine parties during busier times. If this is an issue for your family, ask the ride attendant for a private vehicle. If necessary, explain why a private vehicle is necessary. We’ve never been turned down.
Private gondolas elevate the Skyliner from being a mere transportation option to an accommodation strategy. The change of environment is a great way for an overwhelmed individual to reset and self-regulate. One of my least favorite tasks is apologizing to strangers when Noah is having a difficult time. You can avoid that in a private gondola. Also, there is very little external sensory input to process beyond the ride’s calm movements and passing scenery.
The Disney Skyliner has multiple stops. Some individuals may be able to quickly reset without leaving the station areas. Others may need more time. You have a couple of options in those situations. One, you can continue riding by boarding a gondola heading in the opposite direction. Two, visit a Skyliner resort hotel for snacks and drinks. You don’t have to be a guest to visit any of the hotels’ quick-service restaurants. Most eateries offer seasonal treats, as well. This can be very motivating for everyone!
Summary
The Disney Skyliner is a convenient, fun, and very accessible transportation option for families enjoying the parks and resorts on the route. It is a great resource for families to consider as a way to reset and help individuals self-regulate during park visits. As the great Professor Leisure once proclaimed, “[a]in’t nothin’ finer” than the Disney Skyliner!
