Dark Universe Is Getting an Indoor Coaster at Epic Universe

We now know what’s coming to the expansion plot at Dark Universe inside Epic Universe: an indoor roller coaster. More monsters and a roof. Both are welcome additions.

Here’s how Universal announced it on social media:

“Electrifying news! Universal Epic Universe is already preparing for its next thrilling addition: an all-new indoor coaster coming to Dark Universe. Located next to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, the attraction will immerse guests in an all-new story inspired by the iconic Universal Monsters franchise. Construction is already underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead.”

The coaster is already under construction. Lucky for us, we have up-to-the-minute details about its progress. Once Universal made the announcement, Bioreconstruct went airborne to get us footage of the job site.

Another bio – Bioscotto – explored the possibilities for Darkmoor Village’s expansion this past summer. A straight-up indoor coaster wasn’t on his bingo card, but he did discuss a rocking-boat hybrid coaster. Maybe that’s what’s coming, but we think Universal would’ve shared those details if it were. Then again, they are notorious for holding their cards close to the vest.

Aahs n Oohs is also wondering what constitutes a coaster. In a BlueSky post, he asks, “Could the ride system of Universal City Studios’ ‘RIDE SYSTEM WITH VEHICLE SUPPORT FOR SUSPENSION AND FLOATING OPERATION’ be considered an indoor coaster? The patent was updated today as a continuation of patent 12702934 (filed on May 4, 2021).”

We wrote about that patent in August. It would be a very cool addition to Darkmoor.

Universal’s announcement also left out which monster or monsters will get top billing. Bioscotto made cases for the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Bride of Frankenstein. I’m not sure Gill-man fits a traditional indoor coaster. His hybrid coaster/whitewater raft ride idea seems better suited to a monster who needs water.

Whatever Universal has decided, they realized their next attraction needed a roof. Epic Universe’s ride operations have been an issue since the park opened in May 2025. And its dependence on outdoor rides hasn’t helped. We encountered several weather disruptions during our September 2025 visit.

An indoor coaster won’t fix every operational problem, but a reliable, high-capacity attraction could give guests somewhere else to go when the outdoor rides shut down. It could also make Dark Universe the park’s strongest land for keeping people moving. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is the most efficient theme park attraction I’ve ever experienced.

We’re looking forward to finding out which monsters we’ll be dodging on this new coaster, how fast we’ll be going, and how many times we’ll be turned upside down. An opening date would also be nice, but we’re not greedy.
