D23 Entertainment Showcase Recap: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and More

Last night, Josh D’Amaro, Dana Walden, Pete Docter, Dave Filoni, Kevin Feige, and a slew of celebrities took the stage for the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the D23 Expo, sharing clips, concept art, casting news, and stories about what’s coming to movie theaters, television, and Disney+ over the next couple of years.

The Honda Center was filled with Disney fans, all jonesing for the latest Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Animation news. For the most part, they left happy. Disney talked about Oswald, a Pixar ghost story, the second season of Ahsoka, and the Coco sequel. The place went wild when Kathryn Hahn took the stage to talk about playing Mother Gothel in the upcoming live-action Tangled movie.

The evening was a big success, even without any huge announcements. Everything Disney presented looked great. But there was one announcement that could have blown the roof off the Honda Center: a Muppet Show revival.

It didn’t happen.

Last February, more than 7.5 million fans watched Jim Henson’s creations in a one-off special on ABC and Disney+ during its first eight days of availability. Those numbers, combined with rave reviews, had many thinking the special would serve as a pilot for a full-season order.

That announcement could still be coming, but D23 would have been the perfect place to reveal it. Maybe it’ll happen down the road. But what more do Kermit, Piggy, and Fozzie have to do to convince Disney that their schtick is a gold mine?

Okay. Rant over. Let’s get to all the greatness Disney did reveal last night.

The Simpsons are coming back to the big screen. Dana Walden announced that a second film featuring Homer, Marge, and Bart is being released on September 3, 2027.

Lilo & Stitch 2 is set to begin filming in Hawai’i later this year. Maia Kealoha will reprise her role as Lilo. Angel, Stitch’s true love, featured prominently in the promo materials.

Disney also revealed The Bluey Movie, which features CGI versions of the heelers.

Queen Latifah and Denis Leary shared a clip of Ice Age: Boiling Point with the audience. The sixth movie in the franchise hits theaters on February 5, 2027.

As I mentioned, one of the night’s special moments was when Kathryn Hahn took the stage to introduce the live-action Tangled film. Disney doesn’t have a great track record with its live-action remakes of excellent animated films. Hahn being part of this project might give them a much-needed win. Tangled comes to theaters on March 31, 2028.

Hahn then introduced Jon Favreau, creator of a new Oswald miniseries coming to Disney+ on February 17, 2027. The live-action/animated hybrid follows Oswald the Lucky Rabbit after an earthquake releases him into the real world.

Disney Entertainment Television

Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Disney Legend Ming-Na Wen (Hera), and Andra Day (Athena) were on hand to promote the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. “Titan’s Curse” debuts on Disney+ on November 20, 2026.

Kingdom Hearts fans should be happy to know a series based on the wildly popular video game is coming to the Disney Channel and Disney+. The series is being developed with Tetsuya Nomura, the game’s creator.

Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton (BBC Studios Natural History Unit) are executive producing LION, a series filmed over four years in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. Filmmakers followed along on Kio’s journey from cub to lion. LION premieres August 19 on National Geographic and August 20 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas then took the stage to promote Camp Rock 3, now streaming on Disney+.

Pixar

Pete Docter led the Pixar portion of the showcase, sharing first looks at the upcoming Incredibles 3. This film is the first in the series not to be directed by Brad Bird. Instead, Peter Sohn is directing. Brad Bird is one of the producers, however. Incredibles 3 hits theaters on June 16, 2028.

Docter then announced Coco 2, sharing artwork of Miguel as a teenager. The film will once again be directed and co-directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, respectively. Benjamin Bratt will return as Ernesto de la Cruz. Coco 2 debuts in November 2029.

Coco will also be featured in the upcoming KINGDOM HEARTS IV game, set to release in late 2027.

Docter also shared news about Ghost Market, a film set in Ono Market on O’ahu’s North Shore. According to Disney, “the living have never set foot in this place — until a fast-talking kid named Kyle blunders in and finds himself on an unexpected supernatural adventure.” Ghost Market is coming to theaters in March 2028.

Finally, we learned more news about the upcoming release of Gatto. This film’s art direction, which combines a 2D hand-painted aesthetic with Pixar’s typical CG animations, is stunning. Gatto premieres on March 5, 2027.

20th Century Studios

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, stars of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, next visited the stage to hype Romy and Michele 2. The follow-up film is coming to Hulu 30 years after the original film hit theaters.

30 years. That doesn’t seem right at all.

Marvel

Vision’s Paul Bettany joined Ultron’s James Spader and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to tease VisionQuest. The final chapter in Marvel’s wildly creative trilogy, which also includes WandaVision and Agatha All Along, arrives on Disney+ on October 14, 2026.

Next, Robert Downey Jr. (Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) joined Kevin Feige to talk about Avengers: Doomsday. The film debuts on December 18, 2026.

Sadie Sink joined Feige to talk about a new X-Men film coming May 5, 2025. Sink, fresh off her performance as Jean Gray in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will reprise her role in that movie. Other cast include Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury.

Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, Rosario Dawson, Hayden Christensen, and Eman Esfandi shared a teaser trailer for Ahsoka. The studio also revealed a beauty of a poster. The show debuts January 20, 2027 on Disney+.

Shawn Levy, director of Star Wars: Starfighter, was joined by Ryan Gosling, who plays Kade Auberon in the film. Gosling, knowing his audience, took the stage wearing a Mickey Mouse Club leather jacket. He is a former Mouseketeer, after all.

The Honda Center crowd was then treated to an exclusive sizzle reel.

Walt Disney Animation Studios

Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, along with Zootopia 2 stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan, announced that Zootopia 3 is in early production. That announcement didn’t take long, but it’s hardly surprising. Zootopia’s sequel made bank at the box office, bringing in over $1.8 billion worldwide.

The studio is also set to release Clay, an original film starring Kieran Culkin, in November 2028.

To help promote Frozen 3, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, Frozen’s sister stars, entertained the crowd with a performance of “Frozen Heart.” Josh Gad crushed it as he sang “Ooooh, Samantha” for his crush. Sorry about that one.

Frozen 3 hits theaters on November 24, 2027.

Finally, Disney highlighted Hexed, coming to theaters on November 25. Walton Goggins stars as Beef Roger Crummchuck while Jodie Foster plays Queen Celeste.

Overall, it was a great night for Disney entertainment. There weren’t any earth-shattering surprises, just solid movies and TV series.
