Celebrating Life Day with Chewbacca at Jollywood Nights

Last month, I met Life Day Chewbacca in front of the Millennium Falcon during Jollywood Nights. I didn’t realize it then, but our run-in happened exactly 47 years after the Star Wars Holiday Special aired on CBS on November 17, 1978. That weird, must-see TV event first introduced fans to Life Day, the Wookiee celebration of family, friendship, and hope.

It was terrible. Spectacularly terrible. But back then, with nothing but Brady Bunch and Leave It to Beaver reruns on TV, even questionable Star Wars content felt like a treasure.

Plot-wise, Han and Chewie are trying to outrun the Empire on their way to the Wookiee home world, Kashyyyk, for Life Day. The story is constantly derailed by odd Wookiee children, musical numbers (Bea Arthur and Carrie Fisher both sing!), an awkward cooking class with Harvey Korman’s Chef Gormaanda, and a Boba Fett cartoon. It all ends with the Life Day ceremony, complete with red robes and blue orbs.

For nearly fifty years, Lucasfilm has pretended the Holiday Special never happened. And while it’s unlikely we’ll ever see it on Disney+, it was fun watching Disney dust off those Life Day props for Jollywood Nights. Fans definitely noticed. The guy in front of us was wearing a Life Day hoodie. Someone else was fully dressed as Chef Gormaanda. Yes, the four-armed character from the show.

I love Star Wars, but I was way out of my league.

We waited 50 minutes to meet Life Day Chewbacca, although half of that was before Jollywood Nights actually started. Chewie was excellent, doling out hugs and handshakes. He obliged me by posing for some pics before the Cast Member photographer took over.

And now, some photos…

Jollywood Nights is packed with great character experiences. We would’ve loved to meet Bing Bong, Partysaurus Rex, and a handful of others, but tough choices had to be made. Otherwise, we might have missed out on What’s This? or Disney Holidays in Hollywood.

But skipping Chewie? Absolutely not.
