Two Lions Retiring from Kilimanjaro Safaris
Disney announced that two icons are moving on from Animal Kingdom. Dakari and Kamari, African lions, are retiring from Kilimanjaro Safaris. The two will enjoy quieter times in a “conservation haven in Florida accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).”
“As long as Disney’s Animal Kingdom has existed, the savanna has been at the heart of this park and home to over 100 animals, including some pretty majestic savanna royalty – African lions. A symbol of strength, nobility and power, Disney’s lions have always been one of the most iconic stops on Kilimanjaro Safaris. For the last decade, two special lions, Dakari and Kamari, have stood tall atop the highest point of the savanna, creating lasting memories for millions of guests who have visited the park and admired their beauty or heard their mighty roar.”

While Penning said that the lions have received world-class care from Animal Kingdom’s caregivers, he admitted this “major decision” is in the best interests of the animals. Movie fans will be familiar with the couple. Disney animators visited the Animal Kingdom savanna to watch and film the lions in preparation for the live-action version of The Lion King.
Animal Kingdom will soon welcome three new lions — one male and two females — to the savanna. The littermates will initially remain backstage as they get acclimated to life in the park. We wish Dakari and Kamari a happy retirement. They’ve earned it!
