The Pirates Lounge Gets a Name: The Beak and Barrel
Walt Disney World has revealed the name of the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge coming to Magic Kingdom. The Beak and Barrel will make its debut later this year. They also provided a backstory for the new Adventureland space.
“Established by the legendary pirate rumrunner, Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, and her talkative first mate, Rummy, this lively pirate pub will soon welcome swashbucklers, scoundrels, bandits and buccaneers of all ages from every corner of the seven seas.”
Before we discuss Imagineering’s design choices, let’s talk about how popular a Pirates-themed tavern will be. In short, it’s going to be bonkers. Disney understands this, which is why they’re limiting guests to 45-minute experiences. Reservations will be required at all but the slowest times. Alright, onto the less stressful stuff.
The Beak and Barrel theming
For years, riders entering the Pirates of the Caribbean queue were greeted by the Barker Bird. He disappeared a while back, but he’s returning as Rummy. He’ll lead guests in a “rousing toast or two” from above the bar.
The Beak and Barrel will have two main rooms. The first, The Mess, was once a gathering spot for Spanish soldiers. It features long tables “allowing for pirates to gather ‘round and tell their own tales.” You probably shouldn’t expect to have quiet conversations while enjoying your grog in there.
The room’s bar features a skull-shaped stern and the “Enchanted Rum Bottle.” That bottle is the source of the tavern’s many specialty brews.
The second room is the Captains’ Quarters, once home to the Spanish Comandante. While this space is supposed to showcase the finer things, its artwork and drapery have suffered at the hands of scallywags and rambunctious pirates.
The Captains’ Quarters will showcase a touch of magic. Above its fireplace, five miniature ships in glass bottles will “come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.”
Disney Imagineers also provided a behind-the-scenes look at the lounge’s logo. If you look closely, you’ll see Rummy and a cutlass in the name.
Disney will share more about beverages and bites coming to The Beak and Barrel soon. Hopefully, they also provide an opening date so I can update our countdown clock.
