The Magic of Disney Animation Opening Date and Map Revealed
Disney has shared details, a map, an opening date for The Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios. Beginning September 14, 2026, guests will finally be able to walk beneath the building’s giant Sorcerer Mickey hat inspired by the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, California.
Inside, guests will find four animation-focused experiences. Most are interactive. Off the Page! will offer Disney character encounters. Olaf Draws! will teach guests how to sketch Disney characters. And Drawn to Wonderland is an immersive playground inspired by the artwork of Mary Blair.
The Once Upon a Studio Theater is less hands-on. It will screen Once Upon a Studio, Disney’s Emmy Award-winning animated short.
Our only concern is what Off the Page! might mean for the spontaneous character interactions currently happening outside in the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard. Earlier this summer, we watched big crowds hanging out with Chip and Dale, Donald Duck, Stitch, Pluto, and Goofy. At one point, Goofy sat down in a planter as kids lost their minds being that close to one of Disney’s OG stars. Mulan and Rapunzel are also known to frequent the courtyard.
Most of those characters are slated for Off the Page!, where their meeting spaces will be themed to different parts of the animation process. That lineup includes:
- Mulan in Story
- Rapunzel in Layout
- Chip n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation
- Donald and Daisy in Computer Animation
- Goofy in Lighting
- Stitch in Effects
Will experiences inside The Magic of Disney Animation mean those free-roaming characters disappear from the courtyard? We certainly hope not. Disney has created a vibe in what was used to be an abandoned space.
With its music, vintage artwork, character statues, and performances by acts like The Record Setters and Hollygroove Swingin’, the courtyard has become one of the few spots inside Hollywood Studios that still feels like old-school Disney. And guests seem to agree. They’re actually spending time there instead of racing off to their next Lightning Lane.
Whatever happens outside, The Magic of Disney Animation looks poised to be another success for Imagineering. After all, Mary Blair, free play, edutainment, and Disney characters are fairly safe building blocks.
The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens September 14, 2026. A soft opening wouldn’t suprise us. Disney Vacation Club and Annual Passholder previews could also be in the cards.
