Test Track 3.0 Overhaul Focuses on Ride Experience, Not Just the Queue

Disney executives recently held a “Behind the Magic” session to provide progress updates on various Walt Disney World projects, including Test Track 3.0. Dewayne Bevil of the Orlando Sentinel was invited to the session and shared what he learned.

While no big announcements were made, we did learn a few things. Like confirmation that Test Track isn’t going to be a reskin:

“I think previous incarnations of Test Track, we looked at the post-show, the pre-show, we definitely put a lot more focus in those areas. This time we’re really looking at the show-show, the heart of the building. That whole part of the space was really cleared out. The focus has been in the storytelling inside that classic architecture building.”

The last time Test Track was updated, much of the focus was on the attraction’s queue. The ride itself remained largely intact. Hundgen’s comments give me hope that Test Track’s third iteration will offer a few surprises when it reopens in late summer.

I also found Jeff Vahle’s comments interesting. Walt Disney World’s president is excited about the company’s plans for the parks. “I turn around and every time I walk someplace, I see we’re digging someplace new. It’s just amazing all the things that are coming out of the ground,” he said. “This is bigger than that with what we’re doing, what we’re envisioning, what we’ve announced, and, by the way, what we haven’t announced. I’ve never been more positive on the future that we have.”

Vahle noted that he was around during Michael Eisner’s tenure, when new attractions (and parks) were a common occurrence. That period set the bar for Disney theme park development. I hope his comments aren’t hyperbole.
