Evan Rodrigues Takes the Stanley Cup to Disney World
Over the weekend, a friend sent me a photo of someone carrying the Stanley Cup from the Caribbean Beach Skyliner station. It was Evan Rodrigues, center for the Florida Panthers. I’m not a Panthers fan (#ALLCAPS), but I had to give him credit. Taking the Stanley Cup to Disney World was a power play.
That was one bad dad joke. My apologies.
Each Stanley Cup-winning player gets 24 hours with the iconic trophy. Many take it to their hometowns. Others throw a party so their friends and family can bask in the Cup’s greatness. But Evan’s choice made for a more public celebration. Even casual sports fans understand the greatness of that trophy. Can you imagine visiting EPCOT the same day as the Stanley Cup?
While Evan’s day with the Cup was more public than most, it was still low-key. Unlike many NHLers who sip adult beverages from the trophy’s bowl, Evan’s family stuck to chocolate milk and maple popcorn. They even filled it with Remy plushes during a visit to the France pavilion. I’ll never forget the Dallas Stars, who partied so hard with the Cup that they returned it to the handlers with a big dent in the base.
The Stanley Cup has left Disney World, probably pining for the World Showcase, Monorail rides, and hanging with Goofy in his hockey uniform. Now it’s stuck in a living room, probably full of champagne, staring out the window and wondering where it went wrong.
