DVC Begins Enforcing Personal Use Rule

Today, Disney Vacation Club began enforcing a longstanding policy. Before booking a stay, whether online or by phone, members must now confirm that the reservation is for personal use only. The impact this may have on the commercial DVC points rental market is unclear. DVCNews.com was the first to report the update.

When booking online, DVC members must now check a box confirming the following statement: “I agree to the Disney Vacation Club terms and conditions, and I attest that this reservation is for personal use only.” When booking by phone, Cast Members are asking members to verify that the reservation is for themselves, their family, close friends, or rental guests.

The “no commercial renting” rule has been in place for years, but that hasn’t prevented a thriving DVC rental market. Here’s the updated language:

“You agree that any reservations made under your membership are solely for personal use and not for commercial purposes, as required by governing documents for each DVC Resort, including but not limited to the Declaration of Condominium and Membership Agreement. DVCM reserves the right to interpret personal use and determine if reservations are booked for personal or commercial purposes in its sole discretion. Personal use may include enjoying the benefits of a DVC Membership with family or allowing use of any reserved Vacation Home to friends and family on occasion. Additionally, personal use means that the member does not regularly or frequently rent/sell reservations booked using their membership.”

I called Member Services this evening to ask about the change. The Cast Member I spoke with confirmed that the policy has always been in effect, just not enforced. She also said that it’s perfectly acceptable to rent points to friends and family “on occasion.”

Interestingly, she said the updated policy enforcement was spurred by member feedback. That’s not surprising, as booking non-home resorts at the 7-month window has gotten more difficult in recent years. While those members will appreciate more availability, others will certainly miss the ability to rent out their points on a regular basis.
